No, Physiotherapists are primary contact practitioners which means that can assess and treat you without referral by a doctor. However if you are claiming for any of the following, you will require a referral from you GP:
- Workers Compensation
- Compulsory Third Party Insurance
- Enhance Primary Care Plan (EPC)
- Department of Veterans Affairs
What should I wear to my appointment?
Please wear comfortable clothing. You may be asked to remove some items of clothing for treatment.
What do I need to bring?
Be prepared to provide your previous medical or surgical history. If you have them and if they are relevant bring scan/MRI reports, and list of medication.
How many visits will I need?
The number of treatments will vary depending on your presentation . After a thorough assessment, the physiotherapist will discuss a suitable treatment plan for your rehabilitation.
Treatment duration depends on your diagnosis, the severity of your injury, your past medical history and other factors. Your physiotherapist will develop a treatment plan aimed at resolving your injury or symptoms. Our physiotherapist will also help you understand your injury and provide you with long term strategies to prevent you symptoms returning.

To claim physiotherapy treatment through medicare, you must first see your GP to obtain an Enhanced Primary Care Plan (EPC). Your GP will determine if you are eligible for up to 5 physiotherapy treatments under this plan.
Your first appointment at PhysioWest involves an assessment, thorough physical examination and discussion with you about your medical and injury history. The physical examination will involve a series of muscle, joint and nerve tests, along with hands on assessment of the problem area. All examinations are very detailed and thorough to ensure we reach an accurate diagnosis and provide you with a treatment plan.
