At PhysioWest, we believe women deserve care that supports their health, confidence, and independence through every stage of life.
We’re excited to share that Women’s Health Physiotherapy with Sarah Johns is now available at both our Saints and Brickworks clinics.
What Is Women’s Health Physiotherapy?
Women’s Health Physiotherapy focuses on the muscles, joints, nerves, and connective tissues of the pelvic floor, abdomen, back, and hips – and how they work together in day-to-day life.
These areas can be impacted by:
- Pregnancy and birth
- Hormonal changes
- Surgery
- Menopause
- Exercise and sport
- The natural ageing process
A Women’s Health Physio can help you better understand what’s happening in your body, reduce pain or discomfort, and support you to return to the activities you love with confidence.
How Women’s Health Physiotherapy Can Help
Sarah provides gentle, evidence-based care in a supportive environment, with a strong focus on education and helping you feel listened to and understood.
Sarah and the team can support you with:
1. Prenatal Care
Pregnancy is a big change for your body. Sarah can help with:
- Back or pelvic pain
- Pelvic girdle pain (including SIJ or pubic symphysis pain)
- Bladder or bowel concerns (e.g. leakage, urgency, constipation)
- Safe exercise during pregnancy
- Birth preparation and pelvic floor education
The goal is to help you stay as active and comfortable as possible throughout your pregnancy, and feel prepared for birth and recovery.
2. Postnatal Recovery
Whether you’ve had a vaginal birth or caesarean, your body has been through a lot. Postnatal physiotherapy can support you with:
- Ongoing back or pelvic pain
- Bladder or bowel leakage or urgency
- Pelvic floor weakness or discomfort
- Abdominal separation (diastasis recti)
- Gradual return to exercise, sport, or work
- Regaining confidence in your body after birth
Sarah will work with you to create a plan that matches your energy levels, lifestyle, and goals – whether that’s comfortably lifting your baby, going for a walk, or returning to the gym.
3. Bladder and Bowel Conditions
Bladder and bowel symptoms are very common, but they’re not something you simply have to “put up with”.
Sarah can help with issues such as:
- Leakage with coughing, sneezing, laughing, or exercise
- Strong, sudden urges to go to the toilet
- Going to the toilet very frequently
- Difficulty fully emptying the bladder or bowels
- Constipation
These concerns can happen at any age, whether or not you’ve had children. Women’s Health Physiotherapy aims to improve control, comfort, and confidence in everyday life.
4. Recovery After Abdominal or Pelvic Surgery
Surgery around the abdomen or pelvis can affect your muscles, posture, and movement patterns.
Sarah can support your recovery after procedures such as:
- Hysterectomy
- Prolapse repair
- Incontinence surgery
- Other abdominal or pelvic operations
Rehabilitation may include gentle movement, scar management, pelvic floor and core retraining, and a staged return to your daily activities.
It’s Not Just About Pregnancy
Women’s Health Physiotherapy is for every woman – not just those who are pregnant or postnatal.
Hormones, lifestyle, and ageing can all impact how your pelvic floor and core function. You might notice:
- Bladder or bowel changes
- Pelvic heaviness or dragging
- Discomfort during exercise, intimacy, or everyday activities
- A feeling of “weakness” or lack of support through your centre
These symptoms are common, but they are not something you have to accept as your new normal.
A Women’s Health Physio can:
- Help you understand what’s going on in your body
- Assess how your muscles and movement patterns are working
- Provide a tailored plan to help you feel stronger, more supported, and more in control
No matter your age or stage of life, your comfort and quality of life matter.
